Yes. It is one of the best uses for solar panels. Air conditioning uses the most electricity during the sunniest hours, and that is exactly when the panels produce the most. With a well-sized installation, you can use the air conditioning all summer and barely notice it on your bill.

We explain how much an air conditioner uses, how many panels you need and how much one of our clients pays in September.

How much electricity an air conditioner uses

A 3,000-frigorie inverter split unit (for a living room or a large bedroom) uses around 1 kWh for every hour it is on. The exact figure depends on the unit, the home’s insulation and the temperature you set.

Here is a typical example on the Costa del Sol or in Murcia:

Use Consumption
1 split unit, 8 hours a day about 8 kWh/day
2 split units, 8 hours a day about 16 kWh/day
2 split units for a month about 480 kWh

With electricity at €0.21-0.30 per kWh (PVPC prices for September 2026, according to FACUA), the air conditioning alone can add more than €100 a month. Add the fridge, cooker, washing machine and hot water, and it is easy to reach €150-200 in a home with air conditioning.

Why solar panels and air conditioning work so well together

They coincide in time. The heat is at its peak between 13:00 and 19:00. During those hours the panels are at their best.

They produce more in summer. In the province of Málaga, each installed kWp produces around 1,650 kWh a year, according to PVGIS (European Commission). On a summer day, that is about 6-7 kWh per kWp.

Selling surplus energy at midday barely pays. You get paid almost nothing for the energy left over at those hours. On 16 September 2026, at 15:00, surplus compensation was €0/kWh (data from Red Eléctrica). If your air conditioning uses that energy, each kWh you don’t buy from the grid is worth €0.21-0.30, not €0.

In short: every kWh the air conditioning uses while the sun is shining is a kWh you don’t buy.

How many panels do I need for air conditioning?

A rough guide:

Every home is different. The roof’s orientation, shading and your schedule change the calculation. That is why we carry out a study before proposing an installation.

And at night?

Panels don’t produce at night. You have three options:

  1. Cool the house in the afternoon, while the sun is out, and turn the air conditioning down at nightfall. This is the cheapest option.
  2. Virtual battery: the energy left over during the day is deducted from your bill in euros.
  3. Physical battery: it stores the afternoon’s energy for use at night. It makes sense if you use the air conditioning a lot at night.

Does air conditioning work with solar panels during a power cut?

A standard grid-connected installation switches off during a power cut for safety reasons. If you want to keep the power on, you need a battery with a backup box. Bear this in mind if you live in an area with frequent power cuts.

What about heating in winter?

Almost all current split units are heat pumps: they cool in summer and heat in winter. For every kWh of electricity they deliver 3-4 kWh of heat.

In winter the panels produce less, but in Málaga and Murcia they still cover a good part of the daylight hours. If you are looking for heating and hot water with maximum efficiency, also take a look at aerothermal heat pumps.

Why doesn’t it reach €0? The bill always has a fixed part: the contracted power, the meter rental and taxes. With a normal household contracted power, that comes to around €15 a month even if you use nothing from the grid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect the air conditioning directly to the panels?

There is no need. The panels power the whole house, and the air conditioning uses that energy like any other appliance.

Is it worth installing panels just for the air conditioning?

If you use the air conditioning for many hours in summer, it is one of the reasons that makes the most sense. It is the appliance that uses the most electricity, and it does so just when the panels are producing.

How much can I save with air conditioning and solar panels?

It depends on your consumption and the installation. In homes with air conditioning on the Costa del Sol, we see summer bills drop from €150-200 to €15-30.

Do I have to replace my air conditioner?

No. If it is an inverter unit, even better, because it uses less and adapts to the available energy. An older one also works, but uses more.

Are there any grants?

Yes. There are income tax (IRPF) deductions and IBI and ICIO rebates in many municipalities. We explain them in our guide to the income tax deduction for solar panels. You can also check the official grants published by the IDAE.
